Hong Kong Consumer Council finds expired plastic products may cause cancer

Issuing time:2017-07-18 16:28

In March this year, the Hong Kong Consumer Council released a survey report that nearly 30% of plastic lunch boxes that can be heated in microwave ovens will release plasticizers. This also means that plastic container products have a shelf life and will age after the expiration date. In addition, PET plastic bottles have been exposed to contain carcinogens-heavy metal antimony, and PET material is currently the most used packaging material in beverages. Even if the product meets the standard, overdue use is likely to increase the potential risk of antimony to the human body.

How many years is it common to use plastic water cups?

Recently, the editor randomly interviewed more than 20 citizens on this issue, and no citizen could tell the shelf life of plastic container products. In the survey, it is common for common food-grade plastic products to be used for three to four years or even longer.

"I have only heard of marking the production date, but I have never heard of the shelf life." During the visit, some plastic product sellers showed several products to the reporter. Whether it was a water cup or a washbasin, there was no shelf life.

Later, the reporter contacted the manufacturer based on the contact information on a plastic water cup. The staff replied that the country currently only requires marking materials, uses, production dates, precautions, etc., and there is no shelf life.

In shopping places such as supermarkets in the city, when reporters asked how long plastic products can be used, most shopping guides gave the answer: "If it is broken, replace it. If it is not broken, continue to use it. We really don't know how long it can be used."

Reminder: Frequent use is recommended to replace it every two years

How long is the shelf life of a plastic product? Experts say that the different usage and cleaning methods of plastic products have a certain impact on the "lifespan" of plastic products. Although there is no clear regulation on the shelf life of any material of plastic, the industry has a general statement that the shelf life of most plastic products is three to five years.

Experts suggest that food-grade plastic products in life should be replaced every two years. After using them for a period of time, check whether they have changed color, become brittle, and whether there are bumps inside. If so, they should be replaced in time.
